Preparations for Youth Olympics are on track

News

PREPARATIONS for Singapore’s hosting of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010 are on track, said Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan.

In a written reply to a query from Mr Seah Kian Peng (Marine Parade GRC), Dr Balakrishnan noted that the construction of the Youth Olympic Village is on schedule, and the timetable for the upgrading of the various competition venues is being finalised.

He said: ‘Last month, a seminar with the International Olympic Council was held in Singapore for transfer of knowledge, and a detailed project schedule has been developed with clear milestones for this major endeavour.’

The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee will also hold talks with international sports federations to discuss the various sports’ technical needs.

Schools can look forward to a ‘twinning’ programme, which links up students with athletes from a foreign country.

That will be launched by the end of the year, along with the Olympic Education programme.

The minister added that Singapore will be sending a team to observe and learn from the management of the Beijing Olympic Games.
